Take A Road Trip – Pack Your Motorcycle Luggage

The open road. The fresh air and wind blowing through your hair. The surge of the engine as you rev it. The fluid feel of the motorcycle on the road as it glides along. You've made preparations for this trip. Your only wish is that you had more storage space. Well, wish no more. There are options.

The subject of storage on motorcycles has long been an issue of concern. With no room for a trunk, not to mention it might look silly, the storage for a motorcycle has been very limited in the past. The first type of luggage system we are going to look at is the saddle bag system.

Taken straight from the old west, cowboys would use two leather pouches, connected in the middle by a piece of leather, and it would be either attached to the saddle, or simply placed underneath the saddle. Each bag would be draped over each side of the horse, and usually wasn't very big. Today's saddle bags are crafted in a similar manner. The saddle bags are usually constructed from real cowhide or PU (man made leather). A quality saddle bag will have strong nylon straps and nickel plated buckles and studs to prevent them from rusting. There are several styles available that could include studs, metal buckles, fringes, conchos, waterproofing and rain gear.

The next type of luggage became popular when Peter Fonda, playing the role of a motorcycle rider traveling to New Orleans, used a backpack to store his luggage on the back of his motorcycle, attached to the “sissy bar”. The sissy bar bag of today can possibly be used as a backpack. There are several materials used in making sissy bar motorcycle luggage. Nylon, cowhide leather, and man made leather are the common types of material used. As with saddle bags, these too can have studs, fringes, metal buckles, nylon straps, and weatherproofing. There are also options available to have wheels and a luggage tote bar for transporting the bag while not on your motorcycle. Some also have reflective strips on the back of the bag, so that when going down the road, drivers can see you.

The motorcycle windshield bag is a unique type of bag, in that it sits on the handle bars of the motorcycle. It is not a large bag, but rather used for storing smaller items like sunglasses or maps. This can even be used for cellphones or other electronics, as some of the windshield bags are weatherproof. Although there aren't as many styles for windshield bags as there are for saddle bags or sissy bar bags, the selection is still varied. Generally made from leather, cowhide or man made, these bags offer a great way to store those often used items while out on a motorcycle road trip.

The last piece of luggage we are going to look at is the motorcycle tool bag. These are small leather or nylon bags made to hold tools, either in a roll-up configuration, or simply as a pouch. Often stored under the seat, it helps to keep your tool kit organized, and safely stored. Many of the same style options that are used with the saddle bags can be found for the motorcycle tool bag.

Motorcycle Leathers And You

I'm sure you have seen them yourself. You see people [usually young] on motorcycles, wearing only T-shirts and shorts and speeding around the town without a care in the world. What's the problem you ask? Why, safety of course!

You see, wearing proper motorcycle apparel is really a safety issue not just a fashion statement. And all too often people find out the hard way as they lose a whole lot of skin as they slide down the road when they are spilled off their bike. Motorcycle riders don't have anything between them and the roadway like automobile drivers wearing seatbelts do. The motorcycle rider is extremely vulnerable when tossed off his bike during an accident.

You can easily imagine how important motorcycle leathers are to a motorcycle rider by visualizing what happens when someone is spilled from their bike. It's highly unlikely that they "land on their feet"! They usually hit the pavement or the gravel on their side or on their back. And considering they usually get dumped from their bike while traveling at some rate of speed they also begin an agonizing slide along the unforgiving surface. What's between them and the loss of skin? Obviously not much if they are wearing shorts and a T-shirt!

Motorcycle leathers are in fact a safety necessity. Motorcycle trousers will provide a lot more protection than denim shorts or even blue jeans will ever to. They offer protection not only in an accident but also from the dust, stones and debris that are kicked up by vehicles in front of you as you drive along. Have you ever had a bug smash against your windshield? Try getting that against a bare thigh on the open highway! And you don't need to get a bee sting when you're doing 80 clicks now, do you? Motorcycle leathers are not just for show. They offer the wise biker protection against the constant hazards of the road and highway.

Motorcycle jackets are more than just a fashion statement. Or at least they should be. Motorcycle jackets [and especially ones reinforced at the seams] will offer you a great deal of protection if you happen to be spilled from your motorcycle and you end up sliding down the road. For that simple reason, don't just go for a thin, fashionable leather jacket thinking you're saving money. A good quality, well-maintained leather motorcycle jacket can last as long as 50 years if you care for it properly!

Driving a motorcycle can be an exhilarating and thrilling experience. Falling off a motorcycle can be a painful one if you're not prepared properly. You won't look cool with a bad case of pavement rash after a long slide down the highway on your back. Choosing the proper motorcycle leathers, from jacket and pants to leather motorcycle gloves may keep you riding the road safely for many, many years.

Motorcycle Tips For The Beginner Riding Enthusiast

There are many options available to the burgeoning motorcycle riding enthusiast. There is help though. The following tips will help to point a beginner in the right direction. Hopefully you will come to enjoy motorcycle riding like so many other people in this world.

The smell of lightweight oil, the rumble of the seat, the slight hint of octane perfume lingers in the air as you slip on your motorcycle helmet. You have your motorcycle boots on, and a rain suit packed on your motorcycle luggage rack. You ease the clutch out slowly and rev the throttle slightly, gliding forward, like a large self propelled ice skate.

The moment is yours. You have all of your motorcycle gear and apparel and have taken off into the wild blue yonder on a journey for your soul. The road and you become one, with your motorcycle as the medium, for your transitive state of mind. Your blood begins to race through your veins, your heart racing in tune with the engine. The vibration of the engine massages every muscle in your body at once. There is really no other feeling that comes close to riding a motorcycle.

If you are a beginner rider there are some attributes about motorcycle riding that you should consider. The first is motorcycle gear, and motorcycle apparel. You should always wear a motorcycle helmet. Motorcycle boots are a nice addition as well. But why stop there? Buy a second set of motorcycle apparel as safe keeping in your motorcycle luggage rack. There may be times that you will need to change clothes on a long trek through the countryside.

You probably won't need to buy multiple motorcycle helmets, unless you have a partner with you for the trip. In which case, there is a definite reason to make sure that you have enough motorcycle luggage storage space. All of your motorcycle apparel can be stored neatly in a motorcycle luggage trailer. Other options available for motorcycle luggage are motorcycle sissy bar bags, motorcycle saddle bags, leather tool bags, and leather windshield bags.

Motorcycle boots have evolved over the century or so of motorcycling's history. There are many different styles and colors to choose from today. A popular style of motorcycle boot used to be WWII combat boots. They were durable, had high sides to help protect from muffler burns, and were water resistant to help protect against the occasional puddle.

Many types of motorcycle gear have been made for todays motorcycle riding enthusiast. From mechanical additions to the motorcycle itself, to additional motorcycle gear for the rider. There are leather and textile jackets, rain suits, leather sissy bar bags, leather tool bags, eye goggles, leather and textile gloves, leather and textile pants, chaps and boots. In sizes ranging from young to old, short to tall, a multitude of choices await you when you purchase your next set of motorcycle apparel.

When purchasing your motorcycle gear, motorcycle apparel and motorcycle boots, remember to get some leather cleaning products for all of your new motorcycle gear. This will help to ensure that the gear you have now, you will have for years even decades to come. There may be many types of leather cleaning products available, but talk to the owner of the shop from where you purchased the motorcycle apparel, and they should be able to point you towards a proven product. After all, they have to keep all of that leather clean while it waits to be boughten from a consumer.

Hell’s Angels Brawl At Bike Week—Daytona Beach, Florida

It was a little over a week ago when I was sitting in the airport about the board a plane that would take me away from the northeast’s hellish winter. The feelings of excitement crept up my spine, my body teething with anticipation. In a few hours I am going to be lying on a beach in the sunshine state, where the only thing I’ll be studying is female anatomy and the drink menu at the bar. As we board plane, visions of beach babes and coconut rum dance through my head. I turn to my travel buddy Jim, who is rocking out to the music blaring from his headphones. From the faint lyrics, I think I could make out the heart-pumping words of Kelly Clarkson’s “Since You’ve Been Gone.” “Jesus man, what are you listening to?” “Dude, I’m getting pumped!” he shouted back. Different strokes for different folks. All I knew, was that we were ready to cut loose.

Two hours later the pilot’s voice came on the intercom, “In a few moments, we will be landing in Daytona Beach, Florida. The weather is 83 degrees and sunny. Have a great spring break and enjoy bike week.” It was music to my ears. I didn’t know it was bike week, but the more the merrier, right? Jim and I approached the baggage carousel and anxiously awaited our luggage. As the red blinking light started spinning and motors on the conveyor belt started rumbling, we focused on the hole spitting out bags; knowing it was the last responsibility we would have to deal with for the next six days.

Our bags finally plopped out, which we grabbed immediately. Outside the terminal we met with our taxi driver; a disheveled, haggard looking fellow named Gilberto. His face was weathered from years in the sun; he could have been an advertisement for sunscreen. This guy was a character and oh boy, did he have stories. He told us stories about girls, bikers, crocodiles-- anything you could imagine—completely full of it, but entertaining. He kept feeding us ridiculous information, and he knew we were eating it up. Thirty minutes, $26 dollars, and few good laughs later, good ol’ Gil dropped us off at the Sea Spray Motel. It wasn’t the nicest accommodation, but it would suffice for two guys on spring break.

Jim and I changed into our swimming trunks and hit the boulevard. We were new to the city so we decided to check out a bar that Gilberto recommended called “The Oil Spill.” As we entered the bar, it seemed like the something out of a movie—the crowd instantly silent. The music might have skipped. We approached the bar, ordered up some drinks and the crowd seemed to continue on with their conversations and stories. What Gilberto forgot to mention was that the bar was a Hell’s Angels hang out. Jim and I stuck out like a sore thumb, to say the least. We relaxed and chatted about plans for the rest of the week, but grew nervous as we heard a loud rumble from outside. It sounded like 500 motorcycles were slowly surrounding on our location.

This is when Jim and I knew we were in trouble. A scrawny man with long grey hair, and an even longer goatee, looked out the window and shouted, “Banditos!” And with one word every biker jumped to his feet. What ensued is far too brutal to actually discuss, but there was a brawl. Fearing for our lives, Jim and I sat at the bar and did the only thing we could; hide in the corner under a table, until the bartender took us out through the back door. Apparently, an Angel stole a loading ramp from the Banditos, which they didn’t take too kindly.

Taken from: As for Jim and I, we retreated to our motel and steered clear of biker bars for the next week. Who knew that stealing Motorcycle loading ramps could spark massive biker battles? At least, I don’t need to worry about bikers stealing my Pace Edwards tonneau cover back home in the northeast; the weather is too cold for them. –Mike Rosania
